How the score works

For every hour of the year we check the feels-like temperature, which already blends in humidity and wind, in both sun and shade. If either one lands in your comfortable range, and it is not raining or gusting past your limits, that hour counts as enjoyable. A city's score is simply the share of your active hours that pass. Move any slider and every city re-ranks instantly.

Comfortable feels-like range

what this means

This is a feels-like reading (the UTCI index), not the air temperature. It rolls four things into a single number:

Air temperature
Humidity, which pushes the feels-like number above the real temperature when the air is muggy, and keeps the two close when it is dry
Wind, which can take the edge off heat or deepen a chill
Direct sun versus shade, the radiant load on your body

An hour counts as comfortable if either the sun or the shade reading falls inside this band.

Wind-gust tolerance

A comfortable hour gustier than this no longer counts as enjoyable.

Sunshine (sky clarity)

what this means

Per-hour sky clarity, from overcast (0%) to clear (100%). Raise the low end to require sun; lower the high end to cap glare. Comfortable hours outside the band stop counting as enjoyable. Leave it at 0 to 100% for no preference.

Active hours (local)

what this means

Only hours in this window are scored, so cold pre-dawn hours never count against a city.

what this means

Keep only cities where a short drive can reach a very different climate — somewhere meaningfully warmer in winter or cooler in summer (mean air temperature). This is driven almost entirely by nearby mountains and coastlines, so it favors cities with elevation or water within reach.

Note: in the US a 20°F warmer winter is rarely within reach of a drive, so at the default the filter mostly surfaces summer heat escapes up into the mountains. Lower the threshold to see milder escapes.
